A fave breakfast spread for my husband!
After looking around at specialty stores in my locale, I realized that I could buy Vegemite for less through Amazon's food distribution. I bought 2 jars for my husband, for Hanukkah - he was thrilled! Next best thing to returning to Australia & bringing some back in our luggage! Wish Amazon carried the larger sized jar!

Australia's healthiest export
Vegemite is practically unknown in North America, but I'll bet there is no one is Australia of an ethnicity who has never heard of Vegemite, and of those who have, almost everyone will have some at home. Every restaurant and side of the road eatery carries it. It comes in tubes, jars, and little packets like jams and butter substitutes do in the US. It is Vegemite, the concentrated yeast extract spread that goes on most slices of bread or toast Down Under. Dark brown to be almost black, it has a strong taste, so if you're a novice, spread it thin. Americans who try Vegemite fall into two categories: those who hate it or love it immediately. Don't take my word for it, check it out online: there is no better sourse for B vitamins than Vegemite. If your are used to nothing other than peanut butter and jam on your bread and...

I just adore my Vegemite!
I was a little leery about trying Vegemite...it has such bad press outside of Australia, but I find I absolutely love it. It is extremely salty, slightly beerish and very savoury. So far I have mostly consumed it with bread and butter...but I have already started taking tastes straight from the jar. I also find I like it better with whole wheat bread than white.I think the main challenge for the uninitiated is that it looks like it might be sweet. It is not sweet at all and you should use it very sparingly mixed with plenty of butter, at least at first.Sadly, my husband also likes it and my supply is dwindling rapidly. I wish they sold it in a larger size.

Instant Biscuits and Gravy
I'm an American and had heard of, but never tried this stuff. Well thanks to the magic of the internet I decided that it was time to see what was up with all this Australian hoopla and get some for myself. When it arrived, with much trepidation, I made some toast, added copious amounts of whipped margarine, and then carefully scraped a blob of Vegemite onto it and mixed it around. And then I ate it.Its a very salty type stuff, with a flavor reminiscent of soy sauce and/or beef bullion, and maybe mushrooms. All I can think of is that this is like instant biscuits and gravy in a spreadable form.Weird but kind of good. I'd get it again!

Love Vegemite, Mate!
Good price and really fast - all the way from OZ, too! I'm not an Australian, but learned to love Vegemite while living with them in Indonesia in the early '70s.

The ultimate Australian treat!
I bought some Vegemite to send to friends in Chicago as part of an 'Aussie' gift package to send with my daughter who was staying with them when she came to the US. For Australians, Vegemite on toast is regarded as one of life's staples. We eat it for breakfast, after-school snacks and late night suppers. It's a cure-all when we're sick and great when we're hungover and can't face anything else. One note of caution - Vegemite is not designed to be spread thickly on toast - it has to be spread in a very thin, even layer, otherwise, it's unpalatable. Enjoy!

Veg-e-mite! Love it!
The Kraft Vegemite definitely tastes better -- it has "depth" of flavor, compared to the other faux Vegemites like Marmite. I spread it on whole wheat matzoh (believe it or not) and love it on roasted unsalted almonds for a really good snack. I must be the only non-Aussie within 200 miles who has gone through several 220 gram jars of the stuff already! Love it!

The great Australian condiment and beer by-product
Vegemite, the great Australian condiment and beer by-product. This is a jar of vegemite. Real vegemite, not that half-strength new stuff. Not a big jar, but with Vegemite, a little goes a long way. Really. There is even a rumour that no non-Australian has ever finished a jar. Also, don't worry about the expiry date. Vegemite never goes off, even keeping it in a cupboard in the heat of an Australian summer, so you do think the sub-Arctic conditions of Europe or the USA will have any impact on it? Nuclear waste will decay faster than this stuff.Alright, so you have your jar of vegemite. Advanced users can find recipes involving vegemite as a dip, in cooking with meat, etc. But if you are an advanced user, why read a review? Walk away from the computer and go and eat some vegemite right now. For you interested novices, here goes:1. Buy vegemite.2. Eat vegemite, preferably on buttered toast or grilled with cheese.Step 2 probably...

Be A Little Adventuresome
I'm not from Australia where Vegemite is so popular but I heard the song "Down Under" and always wondered what Vegemite was. I found out that its a yeast product made from the process of beer brewing. What I was intrigued about is that it is vegetarian but with a beef flavor. I ordered it through Amazon's Marketplace and here it came all the way from Britain. I spread some on a piece of bread and decided immediately that it was an acquired taste, but then again after a few days I found myself using it fairly often especially on crackers. Well, my wife started putting it in soups and that really cinched my love for it. It's very good for you and a new taste sensation to try if you like being a little adventuresome.

Call me a convert
I was frightened by my breakfast today. Vegemite on buttered toast. Yes, I had researched the traditional way to eat it. But still... I was scared. I faced my fear. I opened the jar. I stared down the thick, dark, brown, gooey goo. I took a spoon and took control. I spooned out a tiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnny bit. Tiny. I put it on the edge of my toast. I made a face. I took a bite. I smiled. In dismay. In pleasure. I picked up the spoon again and commanded the brown goo to give me more more more. Well, still sparingly, but, nevertheless... more. I used no more than 1/2 teaspoon on my slice of toast. I had a second slice with another almost 1/2 teaspoon. I updated my Facebook status. People replied in curiosity, in fellowship or in disgust. Or all of the above. About an hour later I craved it again, and I indulged again. Between waking and dinnertime, three slices with that just-less-than-one-half-teaspoonful of Vegemite was all I consumed, and, I swear, I was pleasantly satiated all day and...

Toothsome and healthful (label reads like B complex)
Real quick: it's a dark paste, thick, kind of like chocolate mousse in colour (but much thicker). The taste is mostly salty, with a noticeable after-taste of bitter, with a very slight hint of dry smoked-fish (if that tells you anything). Why it's not easily available I can't begin to guess, since this is a kind of condiment that, if you get a drop of it in your mouth, you'll continue to "nibble" till the jar's empty: it's really addictive. Goes very well with pretty much everything, from a slice of bread with butter, to veggies, to, believe it or not, almond butter. As long as it's not too sweet, it goes well with Vegemite, I think: like take butter, Irish butter (unsalted, creamy but neutral in taste) will do great; French (like President) probably not -- too flavourful itself, sweet. One thing though: it's mindlessly promoted by all kinds of cretins (including the manufacturer) as a spread: god forbid you spread it all over that piece of bread, you're gonna...

This American loves it
Yes, it's a bit of an acquired taste, but once you acquire it, nothing will do. I came to Vegemite after a long history of enjoying its British cousin, Marmite. Marmite lovers will find Vegemite to be a bit less sweet and more, I don't know, "unadulterated" than Marmite. Vegemite is pretty much pure yeasty goodness and tastes like a big salt and umami bomb. For those who want to get a general idea of the flavor, think a beef bouillon cube or soy sauce in spreadable form. That'll get you in the ballpark of flavors. If you don't like it as a spread (it goes awesome on a cheese sandwich, by the way, though I normally just have it with butter on toast), it can be used to good effect in soups, stews, and gravies, in the same way you might use a bouillon cube to amp up the flavor (as yeast extract is often used commercially to enhance flavor.)

An Acquired Taste for Most
I love Vegemite and Marmite! It is definitely an acquired taste for most Americans, and I learned to love it a long time ago. My taste for it was reinvigorated by a wonderful trip to New Zealand where it is commonplace. Not so much here - hard to find and expensive for a small jar. It is a yeasty, salty, umami taste treat - perfect spread lightly on toast, sandwiches, rice cakes. It's not for everyone, but I was delighted to find it through Amazon.com.

He would make a special effort to re-label his goods in a way that makes them look like Sanitarium products, because that company has become adept at whipping up media headlines that in turn result in the highlighted product becoming a sell-out. Speaking from South Africa, Sanitarium New Zealand general manager Pierre van Heerden said delays to repair work make it unlikely Marmite will be back in production before the middle of July. In early February, the sample was flown from South Africa to Sydney, where it was met by a Sanitarium staff member, who escorted it on a flight back to New Zealand, van Heerden said. Staff at Pioneer Foods in Johannesburg, with which Sanitarium has links, worked over new year on producing a replacement Marmite using ingredients from around the world. We are getting no more Marmite largely because of delays with work on earthquake-damaged parts of Sanitarium’s Papanui factory.

That works for me (like I said, I’m fairly interchangeable), but for real Marmite fans, suggesting they buy Vegemite is like telling Holden fans to just support Ford, or Crusaders supporters to support the Blues … or even telling people that leave... Well, one of the obvious alternatives is to head down the Vegemite track (seriously, this whole thing is fantastic publicity for both Marmite and Vegemite). British Marmite can be bought in New Zealand but there was obviously a bit of a punch-up regarding the ‘Marmite’ name, and the  UK version lost (woot. Countdown, bless ‘em, have said that people should buy Vegemite instead. Since moving to New Zealand, I’ve managed to train myself to appreciate either NZ Marmite or even Vegemite, but when I try the UK version again, it tastes a bit odd in comparison. Alternatives to Marmite Marmite not your thing. Another alternative is to buy the UK stuff. Trade Me Auctions Commence Auctions for Marmite on Trade Me have been cropping up all over the show.
